Reflections
My internship at IBM was an incredible learning experience and I absolutely loved my time there! Here are just a few of the lessons I learned:
- Always design for the user, and never lose sight of this goal, even when you’re focusing on the details. It’s easy sometimes to get lost in the weeds when perfecting small design specs, and I learned how critical it is to step back and refocus on why we’re even building a product in the first place: the user!
- Fight for the value add. Designing closely with engineering and product often means making compromises when navigating constraints. This also means that designers can play an important role negotiating for critical features that more effectively solve the problem at heart and make for better user experiences.
I’m immensely grateful for having had the opportunity to contribute to real active projects, designing for an array of interesting and complex technical use cases. I grew tremendously as a designer, collaborator, and professional.
A huge thank you to my amazing teammates (shown here in this beautiful group picture taken in Teams) who welcomed, supported, and pushed me to grow. They’re truly some of the best people around, and I feel so lucky for getting to work with them – until next time! ◡̈
